For A Little Touch Of History

You know what they say of those who do not know their past? Anyway, here's an interesting read:

The first Gay and Lesbian Pride March and Rally in the Philippines and the first in Asia, was sponsored by Oscar Atadero and Allan Tolosa and ProGay Philippines on June 26, 1994. Fr. Richard Mickley, who officiated the first Pride Mass in June 26, 1991, also celebrated the Pride Mass and gave the keynote talk at that historic event. It was attended by members of many lesbian and gay-friendly organizations at that time, marking the 25th anniversary of the Stonewall riots by gays and lesbians in New York, which set off the annual Pride celebrations throughout the world.

Malate has had several gay pride celebrations even before it was called the White Party in 2001. It was then organized by John Glenn of Blue Café early 90s, then later, Colin McKay of Joy. In 2001, Jay Santos came up with the all white theme and pitched it to Markus Schmidt and Jomar Fleras, the heads of the Organizing committee at that time. Thus the White Party in Manila was born. The White Party (Officially the Pride Party of Manila) has never been celebrated in other cities in Metro Manila on the same day, basically to encourage all gays and lesbians to join in a FREE celebration in just one venue on one night. And where else will it be most appropriate other than in gay Malate? Manila Pride celebrations had always been and always will be a Malate activity, as it is known worldwide to be the gay district of the Metro Manila, as Castro is to SFO, West Hollywood is to LA, and Greenwich Village is to NYC.

Task Force Pride, a network of 15 to 20 gay and lesbian-friendly organizations, primarily organized the Pride March later on, the last one in 2002 (http://pridemanila.cjb.net/). More recently, the Pride March/Parade is done in December at the Quezon City Memorial Circle, together with the commemoration of World AIDS Day.

As for PRIDE Party Celebrations in Malate (which used to follow the Pride March), it is organized annually by a consortium of gay owners of bars/establishments in the Malate area. The MALATE WHITE PARTY CONSORTIUM 2005 is proud to invite every gay and lesbian in the country come and celebrate Manila Pride 2005 in a FREE street party for everyone at the Orosa Strip! This year, performers headed by Aiza Seguerra, Ruffa Mae Guinto, and Bituin Escalante, grace the celebrations, together with Michael Cruz, the Hotlegs, and the Drag-ons of Club Mwah!

Stand up and be PROUD!
